The Next Available Step

A dispatch is a shorter form — a field observation, not a finished argument.

Here is one: almost nobody who is stuck describes themselves as lacking a next step. They describe themselves as lacking a whole map. 'I don't know what I'm doing with my life' rarely means zero visible options — it usually means the person cannot see step nine, and has decided that not seeing step nine disqualifies step one.

In practice, step one is often visible the entire time. The stall is not informational. It is a demand for certainty being placed on a situation that will not offer it in advance.

This is not a call to abandon planning. It is a note on where planning quietly becomes procrastination wearing a more respectable coat.
