What changes when a person sees themselves as an author rather than a recipient?

A shift in self-concept — from someone things happen to, to someone who participates in what happens — may be one of the most consequential changes available to a person.

Working Hypothesis

Working hypothesis: self-concept as 'author' correlates with higher initiation of change, not because outcomes become more controllable, but because attention shifts to the territory that is actually influenceable.

What We Know

  • Locus of control and self-efficacy research links agentic self-concept to persistence and initiation of action.
  • Narrative identity research shows that how people frame their own story shapes future behavior.

What We Do Not Yet Know

  • Whether the shift is durable or situational.
  • How much of the effect is genuine capability versus perceived capability.
