Build the Environment

What changes when you redesign the environment instead of relying on motivation?

01

The Shift

Motivation is an unreliable fuel. Environment — what's easy, visible, and frictionless — often predicts behavior better than intention does.

02

The Experiment

  1. Choose one behavior you've tried and failed to sustain through willpower alone.
  2. Redesign the physical or digital environment so the desired behavior requires less friction, and the competing behavior requires more.
  3. Make no other change — do not also try to 'want it more.'
03

Now Go Live It

  • Run the redesigned environment for seven days and track whether the behavior occurred, independent of how motivated you felt each day.
04

What Did You Notice?

  • Did the behavior happen on low-motivation days because the environment carried it?
  • What friction did you remove, and what friction did you add to the competing behavior?
05

Why This May Have Happened

Environment acts continuously; motivation is intermittent. Structural changes keep working on days when internal resolve is low.

06

Take This With You

This experiment is not a rejection of willpower — it's a test of what it should not have to carry alone.
