Borrowed Beliefs

A belief that feels self-evident often has a traceable origin — a parent's caution, a single humiliation, a cultural script absorbed before you could evaluate it.

1. List three things you consider 'unrealistic' for someone like you.
2. For each, trace it back: who first said or modeled this limit? When did you adopt it as your own?
3. Ask whether the evidence for the limit is current, or inherited from a different time, person, or context.

• Pick one inherited limit and identify one small, low-stakes action this week that would test whether it still holds.

• Which limit turned out to have a clear, nameable origin?
• Did tracing its source change how solid it felt?
• What did the small test reveal?

Beliefs adopted before a person could evaluate them tend to feel like facts rather than positions. Tracing origin re-introduces the possibility that the belief is a choice rather than a law.

Some inherited limits are protective and still accurate. The goal is examination, not automatic rejection.
